STRONG STORM POTENTIAL FOR MUCH OF EASTERN QUEENSLAND LATER NEXT WEEK

STRONG STORM POTENTIAL FOR MUCH OF EASTERN QUEENSLAND LATER NEXT WEEK
Early indications on the Oz Cyclone Chasers Weather Centre show strong to possibly severe thunderstorms are quite likely as we head into the latter parts of next week. Storm potential increases across the state's eastern half from early next week, but the strongest of the storms are likely between Townsville and Gympie and extending west to Emerald from about Wednesday afternoon. The modelling below shows the storm potential diagrams for Wednesday (Hervey Bay/Capricornia), Thursday (All thr...

THUNDERSTORMS EXPLODE IN THE MARANOA/WARREGO DISTRICTS IN THE PAST HOUR

In the past hour thunderstorms have exploded in a warm, unstable and better sheared environment in the Maranoa/Warrego Districts. The thunderstorm/shower clusters are quickly moving in a general eastwards movement, and may affect the following notable locations over the next few hours - Injune and Roma. It will be interesting to see how far eastwards these thunderstorms can move, and we will be watching to see if they can make the Darling Downs as the afternoon progresses. A severe thunders...

THUNDERSTORMS FIRE CLOSE TO TOOWOOMBA AND EAST OF WIVENHOE DAM.....SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNINGS AGAIN ISSUED IN NORTHERN NSW

As you can see by the OCC RADAR above, thunderstorms have formed in 2 areas so far in SE QLD, with 2x clusters of lightning active cells located near Toowoomba and just east of Wivenhoe Dam. Further shower and thunderstorm activity is expected throughout the afternoon, and in some localised thunderstorms, damaging winds and large hail are a threat if any storms can get going. However, the atmosphere is lacking a few ingredients today that could have made the day a very very good thunderstorm da...

MONSOONAL MOISTURE FUNNELED SOUTH-EAST INTO W.A. AS TROPICAL LOW MOVES SOUTH

A complex link between the monsoon trough, a surface trough (and weak Tropical LOW) and the jet stream has resulted in lots of tropical moisture being funneled South-east towards the North-West Cape and the Gascoyne region of Western Australia. An unusually very active and unusually positioned monsoon trough between Christmas and Cocos Islands has spawned a weak LOW around 13S 101E. That LOW is drifting southwards and is dragging tropical moisture south with it. A strong jet stream in the u...

STRONG STORMS ACROSS SOUTHERN QUEENSLAND LIKELY TOMORROW

Looking at the Oz Cyclone Chasers Weather Centre Storm Probability maps it looks like more widespread storms are expected on day 2 of the Southern Queensland storm outbreak. At this stage it appears as though the bulk of the storm activity will remain inland just like today (today's storms were never expected to make it to the coast due to a strong sea breeze and a trough which didn't move east). However the risk of one or two of these making it to the coast is slightly higher tomorrow, bu...

THUNDERSTORMS FIRE IN NE NSW - SEVERE T'STORM WARNING ISSUED......SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE IN SE QLD THIS AFTERNOON

Isolated thunderstorms have developed in NE NSW just south of the border and are slowly pushing north. Large Hail and Damaging winds are possible, and even the chance of some localised flash flooding in small creeks and streams, especially considering how slow moving the thunderstorms are. The current cells are very lightning active, with the majority of lightning strikes being Cloud to Cloud, however some dangerous Cloud to Ground lightning is now being observed via lightning tracker...

RAINBAND MOVES THROUGH EASTERN QLD TODAY AND TONIGHT

What started as a weak trough near the Kimberley of W.A almost a week ago is now motoring eastwards through Queensland and dumping light to moderate falls of rain as it goes. Rainfall totals until 9AM today have been quite low due to a drier low level atmosphere which is not creating much uplift of moisture from the surface despite the strong forcing of a southerly change ahead of the trough.  Become an OCC subscriber today to access our Weather Centre and watch the band push through live ...

WEAK TROPICAL LOW TO FORM ON TUESDAY OR WEDNESDAY

Another weak Tropical LOW is set to form or enter in the Western Australian Cyclone region this coming week. The LOW is expected to form near the South Coast of Indonesia on Tuesday and then drift south as the week progresses. The system is very unlikely to intensify into a Tropical Cyclone, however computer models indicate that as it drifts south and weakens, it could feed tropical moisture south-eastwards onto the Western Australian coastline. Early indications are that it could bec...

SPECTACULAR RAIN AND STORMS ACROSS THE TOP END BRING THE BUILD UP TO LIFE

SPECTACULAR RAIN AND STORMS ACROSS THE TOP END BRING THE BUILD UP TO LIFE
Storms like the one pictured above from Jaco Venter show us how spectacular the build up can be across the Northern Territory's Top End region. A trough system has further enhanced the usually isolated build up storm activity. The trough system will clear the Top End coast tomorrow and weather conditions should stabilise and become drier across the region as SE winds take hold.  Through next week we should see very isolated showers and storms across coastal and adjacent inland sections...

HE'S A BIGGIE - CAT 5 HAIMA ABOUT TO PUMMEL THE NORTHERN PHILIPPINES

HE'S A BIGGIE - CAT 5 HAIMA ABOUT TO PUMMEL THE NORTHERN PHILIPPINES
Mesmerising, beautiful but potentially deadly would be the best way to describe Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Haima as he approaches the Philippines Northern coastline. Haima is expected to hit the Philippines northern coastline tonight with wind gusts to 175 knots possible (324km/hr). The silver lining (if there is one) as far as the local population is concerned is that this area of the Philippines tends to be reasonably unpopulated.  Become an Oz Cyclone Chasers Eyewall member a...

MAJOR TROUGH TO DUMP RAIN ACROSS LARGE PARTS OF AUSTRALIA

A major trough system will begin forming near the Northern Kimberley tomorrow. The trough system will remain slow moving through tomorrow and Thursday before an Upper level system amplifies and whisks it eastwards quickly beginning Friday. The trough is expected to produce widespread showers and storms across the country east of a line from Broome to the SA/WA border. Indications are that the system will make it to Queensland on Sunday. With some of the heaviest rain expected to fall around...
